York City F.C. Clubman of the Year

York City Football Club is an English association football club based in York, North Yorkshire that currently competes in the Conference National. The York City Clubman of the Year award is voted for annually by York City's supporters to name a player who throughout the football season has met the three criteria of sportsmanship, effort on the field of play and ability.[1] Fans previously made their choice through the use of voting forms, which were handed out at Bootham Crescent towards the end of each season,[2] but as of 2011 voting has been carried out by fans e-mailing the club their choice.[1] As a mark of respect, the trophy is named the Billy Fenton Memorial Trophy, after player Billy Fenton, who died suddenly in 1973.[3] The award was traditionally presented before the final game of the season by Fenton's widow, Margot Fenton,[4][5] but as of 2011, at the request of manager Gary Mills, it is presented at an awards' presentation evening.[1]

Since the inaugural award was made to Phil Burrows in 1974, seven players have won the award twice, most recently defender Danny Parslow in 2009 and 2011.[6][7] Gordon Staniforth was the first to win the trophy in consecutive seasons, a feat since emulated by defenders John MacPhail and Barry Jones and Fettis.[6] Chris Brass, the winner of the 2003 award, went on to manage the club from 2003 to 2004.[8]
